Office Excitement

The biggest, most exciting thing that's happened around our office in years is about to happen...

... that's right, after 5 1/2 years working here and having next to zero food options around our building, other than a couple of over-priced delis, or a long walk to Taco Del Mar...

... a Subway is opening right across the street from the building on Westlake.

It's glorious.  It's spectacular.  That Subway is going to get a LOT of business. :)

Now everyone's walking down the hallways doing the $5 Footlong hand gestures.  OK, maybe not, but that'd be hilarious.  I think I might start that. :)

Holiday Madness

I appear to have been in another of my predictable blog droughts. It's not that there hasn't been enough going on, in this case there's probably been too much going on. As a result, this blog is brought to you by Google Calendar: "The only way to know what all you did the past month!"

  • Went to two musicals plus the Seattle Symphony's holiday pops concert. All of which deserve their own reviews, but may or may not get them. We'll see how much time I make for them today.
  • Lots of curling, culminating with a break from actually curling, only to be the head official for the state junior curling championships this past weekend. Being both competent and willing to volunteer is a dangerous combination. Tiring but a lot of fun.
  • Started the process of looking for a house. I'm sick of my apartment, and after waiting for a year or so until the market is finally right, it's time to buy a house. Now I just have to find the right place. Once the new year starts, it should be prime time for people to start selling decent places again... I hope.
  • Christmas came and went, and New Year's is here. I don't think I really realized Christmas was coming until about the Friday before. Things have been a bit hectic.
  • How can I forget how this all started? The day I got home from vacation in Hawaii (well, actually the day before I got back to work), my company decided to lay off 18 people, including half of my team. I was spared, but half of my friends and coworkers were told their last day was December 12th. It's made for quite the uninspiring holidays around the office. Fortunately a few of us insisted on making things a bit cheerier and helped decorate the office for the holidays. I strung my customarily tacky Christmas, er, Secular Festive Non-Denominational Culturally-Inclusive Wintertime Holiday Lights, throughout my aisle of cubes and from the ceiling and all. It was quite nice. Regardless, unless things drastically change around work, 2008 may become time to look for a new place to work.
  • And yes, I know I'm behind on Amazing Race episode blogs. Legs 6, 7, and 8 are all on my DVR waiting to be watched, I've just had more important things to do. At least this way I can just sit down and watch them all at once one of these days.

Global Warming? Yeah, right.

If anyone needs proof that Global Warming is bogus, I now have it. This Seattle weather we're having is quite possibly the most insane weather I've seen in 27 years. Sure there has been snow, sure there's been wind and cold... but this is just odd.

Not that it's surprising, but the weathercasters around here have absolutely no clue what they're doing when it starts to snow. Sure, they make it seem easy enough, cold air comes in from the north, meets the moist air from the south, in one of their favorite areas the "Puget Sound Convergence Zone", and just like Emeril would say... BAM!... snow. If only it really were as simple as they make it seem, perhaps it would actually stop snowing when they say it would. But no, this latest blast seems to have come out of nowhere and just appear.

The biggest question is, to go to work tomorrow or not. The official word from the office was "If Seattle schools are open tomorrow, Insightful is open tomorrow." Well, Seattle schools are closed... but that leaves a bit of ambiguity as to whether or not work is. I'll see how the roads look in the morning and if anyone else is going to work. I probably could make it to work with relatively little difficulty, but that hardly means much if there isn't anyone else there.

Alas, what an uninteresting blog today... but at least I put something here.

What can I say?

How quickly time flies when you have nothing productive to say.

Have I had anything profound to say lately? No. Do I have anything profound to say now? No, not really. But I'm blogging anyway just so people know I still exist. Here comes the 30-second recap of everything that's happened in the past week.

Super Bowl - Yes, the Seahawks lost to the NFL Referees in Super Bowl XL. I'd rather have seen them lose on their own merits, but that's how it goes. My super bowl party went well, and I successfully proved that my apartment IS big enough to hold 8 guests with nobody needing to sit on the floor. That was pretty impressive.

Curling - Curling continues as usual. Friday night my team made me skip the game... despite my best resistance. :) [note, "skip" doesn't mean I missed the game, in curling the skip is the head of the team who calls the shots.] It was actually not bad, I curled well, and we won the match. No curling on Sunday due to the super bowl, but on Monday night I curled my normal lead position, and continued my outstanding curling. Going into Monday we were tied with one other team for first place in the league, both teams an undefeated 3-0 record. As luck would have it, we played the other team at the top of the standings. We proceeded to score 6 in the first end, and 3 more in the 2nd end, and went on to win the match by about 10-2, bringing our record to 4-0 and sole posession of 1st place. Of course, the season has I believe 6 or 7 games left, so there's plenty of time for us to fall to the bottom. :)

Work - Work is busy, yet not too bad. Trying to be productive over the course of the week and next before I go on vacation from the 17th to the 24th when Andrew is in town. That should be quite exciting, as the last real vacation I took was probably back in September. Though without a doubt I'll return to the work in a major crunch and have tons of work to catch up with. Makes me wonder how much of a vacation "vacation" really is.

Olympics - The Olympics start on Friday... opening ceremonies Friday night if you watch NBC's delayed coverage... but Friday at 10am if you watch CBC's live coverage. Thank goodness for Canadians and my DVR, I'll be able to watch the coverage in fast forward when I get home from work before I have to go curling. Other more lucky people might not have to work and be able to watch the opening ceremonies live at 10am.

I can't think of anything else important off hand... maybe next time.
